Organization and Responsibility
The College of Arts and Sciences leadership is divided among deans who oversee specific academic and administrative areas within the college. External relations, human resources and budget offices assist in the management and administration of the college.
Lacy Ford, Ph.D., dean
Dean Ford provides academic and administrative leadership to the largest college of the University of South Carolina. He provides oversight for budget, curriculum development, and policies and procedures.
Roger Sawyer, Ph.D., executive associate dean
Dr. Sawyer serves as the college’s liaison for the Office of Equal Opportunities Programs and the Office of Student Disabilities. He coordinates with the Division of Law Enforcement and Safety, Human Resources, General Counsel and the Office of the Provost. As is necessary, Dr. Sawyer represents the dean.
Bob Thunell, Ph.D., senior associate dean for natural sciences
Dr. Thunell is the liaison between the departments of biological sciences; chemistry and biochemistry; School of the Earth, Ocean and Environment; geography; mathematics; physics and astronomy; psychology; and statistics; in addition to the associated interdisciplinary programs, centers, and institutes. He oversees and reviews all third year, tenure and promotion, and post tenure review files, as well as sabbatical requests and nominations for named professorships and faculty awards for natural sciences.
Hanno zur Loye, Ph.D., associate dean for research and graduate studies
Dr. zur Loye oversees all graduate directors within the college, college grants administration and annual SmartState reports. Dr. zur Loye serves as the liaison for the USC Office of Research, the College Institutional Review Board, and the Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry in regards to budget-related matters.
Douglas Meade, Ph.D., associate dean for instruction, curriculum, and assessment
Dr. Meade coordinates curriculum and assessment for all degree programs and serves as a member of the Carolina Core Committee. Dr. Meade represents the college as the academic program liaison, as well as the liaison for budget-related matters with the Walker Institute, the Institute for Public Service and Policy Research, the Interdisciplinary Mathematics Institute, and the Department for Criminology and Criminal Justice, and the Department of Mathematics. He is responsible for the administration of the university and collegiate academic policies for undergraduate advising, progression, graduation, suspension, study abroad, and academic integrity.
Cynthia Davis, Ph.D., associate dean for arts, humanities, and social sciences
Dr. Davis’s responsibilities include liaising between the dean’s office and the departments of anthropology; criminology and criminal justice; English, history; languages, literatures and culture; philosophy, political science, religious studies, sociology; theatre and dance; and the School of Visual Art and Design; as well as the resulting interdisciplinary programs, centers, and institutes. Dr. Davis reviews all third year, tenure and promotion, post tenure review files, as well as sabbatical requests and nominations for named professor ships and faculty awards for arts, humanities, and social sciences.
Alan White, Ph.D., associate dean, undergraduate STEM education
Dr. White is actively involved in projects for the improvement of science education practices, advancement of learning science of animations, and improving the use of animations in various classroom and learning formats.
Tracey Weldon-Stewart Ph.D., associate dean for diversity and inclusion
Dr. Weldon provides input into decision making, strategic planning and hiring initiatives to enhance diversity, inclusion, and equity. She supports a culturally competent educational environment through curricular representation and culturally and linguistically appropriate services (CLAS). Dr. Weldon also works with the USC Chief Diversity Officer and other members of the diversity network to promote an institutional culture that fosters humanistic values of mutual respect, civil behavior, and ethics consistent with USC’s initiatives in conscious leadership and professionalism.
Ginger Nickles Osborne, Ph.D., assistant dean for academic planning and enrollment
Dr. Nickles Osborne allocates and manages all resources pertaining to graduate assistants, non-tenure track instructional staffing, adjunct staffing and summer instructional staffing. She also works closely with the associate dean of instruction, curriculum and assessment, Dr. Meade, to review departmental curricular plans and faculty workload.
Loren Knapp, Ph.D., assistant dean, undergraduate student affairs and advising
Dr. Knapp is responsible for representing the college in all matters related to undergraduate services, including working with the Office of Student Information Services and Scheduling and serving on a wide-range of committees.

LaTasha Robinson, director of human resources
Manages all HR operations of the college to include but not limited to the hiring and reappointing of faculty, staff, students, and temporary employees, promotions for non-tenure track faculty, tenure and promotion, post-tenure review, third-year review, retention actions, sabbatical leaves, dual employment, ECOM processes, resignations, retirements, and oversight for awards, professorships, and endowed chair appointments. Process, at the college level, all leaves of absences, including FMLA, LWOP, personal leave, military leave, jury duty, bereavement leave, etc. for all faculty, unclassified staff, and classified staff. Act as a liaison between employer and employee, overseeing employee relations for staff and faculty. Assists in the preparation and monitoring of the college's personnel budget; advises on matters related to the human capital management processes of the college and university.
