Mary Baskin Waters LectureTuesday, March 21, 2017 - 6:00pm
Location: Law School Auditorium
Speaker: Maria Toorpakai
Topic: Human Rights in the Face of Extremism
Abstract: This lecture will focus on women in sports, an area in which Toorpakai has a unique perspective. Toorpakai is a professional squash player, currently ranked as Pakistan’s top female player and 48th in the world. Growing up in a highly conservative, tribal area of Pakistan, but within a progressive and permissive family, Toorpakai spent her early years training, competing, and living as a boy. With a documentary feature in the works, a foundation for women’s rights and education in her name, and world championships in sight, Toorpakai is an inspiration to women everywhere and a champion in the face of nearly insurmountable odds.
This annual lecture series is named in honor of benefactor, longtime community partner, and service learning advocate Dr. Mary Baskin Waters. Dr. Waters earned her B.A. in Art Studio from the University of South Carolina, as well as her master’s and Ph.D. She is an affiliate faculty member in the Women’s and Gender Studies Program and in the Department of Political Science.
