China is one of the world’s oldest civilizations, with nearly 4,000 years of written history. It is also a fast-growing world power, both politically and economically. Through the Confucius Institute, students at the University of South Carolina, along with area business people and members of the local community, can learn more about this important Asian nation.
Established in 2008, the nonprofit Confucius Institute is a joint program of the Beijing Language and Culture University and the University of South Carolina that is designed to promote Chinese Language education, as well as educational, cultural, and business exchanges, between the state of South Carolina and China.
The Confucius Institute has many exciting programs. For University of South Carolina students, formal courses in Chinese Language are offered. Students can also travel to Beijing to learn “Business Chinese” and to increase their knowledge of China during short summer and winter camps scheduled when the University is not in session.
For Columbia-area residents who want to learn more about Chinese language and culture, the Confucius Institute offers small classes or individual tutoring at reasonable prices. Art courses, such as Chinese Calligraphy/Painting and Chinese Ceramic Art, are also offered at various times. And, China-related cultural activities – such lectures, art shows, song-and-dance programs, and film festivals -- are sponsored, as well.
