top of Smoky (also top of Smoky Mountain) noun The main ridge of the Great Smoky Mountains that runs along the TN/NC state border.

1927 Thornburgh Tramping 466 Looking out over an unended sea of mountains tumbled and massed confusingly, I suddenly realized that “Top of Smoky” as the main divide is affectionately called by the mountain people, is literally the tops of many high ridges, which branch off into North Carolina and Tennessee and are connected by other mountains or narrow ridges. 1953 Hall Coll (Bryson City NC) That’s a house that I had to live in on top of Smoky Mountain. 1975 GSMNP-59:15 My father took it on top of Smoky Mountain at the head of what we call Locust Ridge.
